Nigel Coates is an architect and interior designer born in Malvern in 1949 whose style was embraced first in Japan before being appreciated later in the UK.

He has designed a wide range of items, from hand-blown glass vases to furniture and from sushi bars to exhibition spaces. Notable projects include the interior design of Tokyo’s Bohemian Jazz Club Metropole and Café Bongo, as well as Café’ Maritimo in Otaru and the newest wing of Schipol Airport in Amsterdam.

Since 1995 he has taught architectural design at the Royal College of Art.
