Victor Burgin (1941 – )
Victor Burgin is an artist and teacher born in Sheffield in 1941.
He studied at the Royal College of Art and Yale University and took part in the exhibition When attitude becomes form at the ICA in 1969. Following this he was dedicated many solo exhibitions including the Daniel Templon Gallery in Paris, Protech-Rivkin Gallery in Washington, Lisson Gallery and Nigel Greenwood in London and Modern Art Oxford.
As a teacher he has worked at Central London Polytechnic and at Yale and Princeton in the United States before becoming a professor at Colgate University, New York in 1980 and a Millar Professor of Fine Art at Goldsmiths’ College in 2001.
Arts Council and Royal College of Art hold examples of his work, which are often based around the investigation of power, society and sex, taking the philosophies of Freud, Marx and Barthes as their inspiration.
Burgin was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1986.
