THE MEANING OF SCULPTURE
An exhibition built round sculptures and drawings by Henry Moore, organised by the British Council, for the Van Riebeeck Tercentenary Festival. The exhibition opened with a section on Primitive, Archaic and Renaissance sculpture drawn the Beit collection and from public and private collections in South Africa, further sections included the work of South African sculptors, The Object of Chance and a section of 23 sculptures, 35 drawings and two Ascher linen panels by Henry Moore. A general catalogue, with a foreword by John Paris and an essay on Henry Moore by Herbert Head, was published to accompany the show.

Sculpture
A three-dimensional work of art. Such works may be carved, modelled, constructed, or cast. Sculptures can also be described as assemblage, in the round, relief, and made in a huge variety of media. Contemporary practice also includes live elements, as in Gilbert & George 'Living Sculpture' as well as broadcast work, radio or sound sculpture.
