White is the colour Lowry increasingly used to create contrast for his industrial scenes and isolate his single figures.

This exhibition explores the many mysteries of this surprisingly elusive, enigmatic colour.

The symbolism of white – with its connotations of innocence and purity - is also explored in the work of artists as diverse as Landseer and Picasso.

Many of the 80 plus artists represented here were much admired by Lowry, such as Dutch 17th century and Pre-Raphaelite painters. Finally, the use of white is seen in purely abstract form, via the monochrome paintings of American artists such as Robert Ryman and contemporary post-modern work.

You’ll never overlook white again!
