THE ABSENT PRESENCE
An exhibition conceived and organised by Anne Goodchild, then Assistant Keeper of Art at Sheffield City Art Galleries. The exhibition set out to explore the evocative power exercised by depictions of the uninhabited interior: when, through the dynamics of picture making, tensions are set up which create an intangible presence. It was not intended to exemplify philosophical theories of the identity of the empty space, not so consider the independent existence of the object when removed from sight. A catalogue, with a text and notes on the works by the selector was published by Sheffield City Art Galleries. ISBN 0 86321 136 4
