An exhibition of work by 14 artists. The selection was restricted to work completed between 1942 and 1947 and 'any effect which the war might have has on our art should be visible. It is difficult to detect any direct influence of this kind, but it is possible that a certain self-confidence, a certain stylistic independence vis-a-vis the Continent, is due to the relative isolation in which we have lived since 1939, and which still continues on account of the restricted import of contemporary works of art from abroad'.

From the catalogue introduction by Herbert Read.
