LA GRAND ATELIER DU MIDI
Since Renoir and Signac first travelled to the south of France, it has been a source of inspiration for painters – a great open-air studio open to other Mediterranean countries. This exhibition chronologicals a presentation of the various movements that have marked the 20th century from 1880 to 1960, including impressionism, post-impressionism, fauvism, cubism, surrealism and abstraction. The two instalments of the exhibition, featuring around 200 pieces of artwork, was presented simultaneously in Marseille and Aix-en-Provence.

Abstraction
To abstract means to remove, and in the art sense it means that artist has removed or withheld references to an object, landscape or figure to produce a simplified or schematic work. This method of creating art has led to many critical theories; some theorists considered this the purest form of art: art for art’s sake. Unconcerned as it is with materiality, abstraction is often considered as representing the spiritual.
