An exhibition of 30 paintings drawn from the collections of the British Council and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. At the time this exhibition was mounted the Gulbenkian Foundation had allocated £10,000 to the British Council ‘for the purchase of contemporary British art, with the accent on younger artists’. These works were placed in the care of the British Council for use in support of its activities until such time as the new Gulbenkian Galleries in Lisbon were completed. A catalogue, with an introduction by Philip James and biographical notes on the artists, was published to accompany the show.
