The exhibition was selected by Kenneth Clarke, then Director of the National Gallery, from the works of the War Artists' Advisory Committee.  A catalogue, wih an introduction by Monroe Wheeler, essay by Herbert and a poem Defense of the Islands by T S Eliot, was published by the Museum of Modern Art to accompany the exhibition.
