1983 SAO PAULO BIENAL - TRANSFORMATIONS
British Commissioners: Julian Andrews and Teresa Gleadowe
An exhibition of the work of six sculptors, Tony Cragg, Richard Deacon, Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor and Alison Wilding, selected by Teresa Gleadowe and Nicholas Serota. The works of these artists attracted considerable international attention in the early 1980s. Several of these artists had exhibited together previously and commentators had variously identified certain shared characteristics: an openness, wit, humour and clarity in their approach, a pragmatic attitude to materials, economy of means and elegance of execution. Despite these observations, the distinct characteristics of each artist predominated. The exhibition was accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with an introduction by Nicholas Serota and commentaries on the artists by John Roberts, Lynne Cooke, Stuart Morgan, Mark Francis, and John McEwen.
