You can now discover selected works from the British Council Collection via a new online exhibition experience, curated by Elif Kamışlı and produced in collaboration with the British Council in Turkey.
Elif Kamışlı, a curator from Turkey, was selected for a British Council Curatorial Residency Programme in 2016. She visited London to explore the Collection and attended part of the British Council Cultural Skills team’s International Museum Academy, which took place at the Whitechapel Gallery, London.
Kamışlı then worked with the British Council in Turkey and a digital agency to conceive the first ever digital art exhibition from the British Council Collection. Her selection of works focused on British landscape and sculpture and the exhibition is entitled I Dreamed a Dream the Other Night.
In the first part of the exhibition, you can see landscape paintings, etchings and drawings from artists such as Charles Cheston, Philip Connard, Duncan Grant, Henry Moore, Gwendolen Raverat and Alfred Thornton. These works reflect the artists’ perspectives on nature at a time when history was witnessing dramatic changes.
The second part of exhibition presents a digital model of Richard Long’s Spring Circle (1992), a work which conveys the artist’s modest yet powerful language and unifies land art with sculpture.
Whilst exploring the works, you can listen to the third part of the exhibition, a sound installation by Susan Philipsz, where she used her own voice to record three different versions of a 16th century Scottish lament.
Visit the exhibition online, watch films about the artist, listen to the audio guide in Turkish or English and you can even send a postcard from the shop.
