From 23 March – 12 April 2017, Noor Afshan Mirza and Brad Butler exhibit Mother, Loosen My Tongue or Adorn Me With a Lighter Burden in downtown Cairo, supported by the British Council in Egypt. As part of the Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival’s visual art programme, Cairo Museum of Contemporary Art, Mirza and Butler have developed a new presentation of their practice, continuing their ongoing exploration of positions that concentrate on women, bodies and sites of resistance.
The exhibition includes large-scale collages drawn from Mirza and Butler’s research in radical and psychic archives, alongside a recent video piece and a series of live events, including public talks exploring themes such as astrology and radical politics.
Artists Noor Afshan Mirza and Brad Butler explore contradictions of inequality, power, privilege and (non) participation in a practice that spans over 20 years and until recently took the form of a fictional institution: ‘The Museum of Non-Participation’ (2008-2016). Their work currently features in the British Council’s touring artists' film programme Moving Pictures, which has travelled to over 25 venues in more than ten countries since 2014.
