Summary
At the outbreak of the First World War John was rejected for military service, but in 1918 was gazetted a Major and sent to France by the Canadian War Memorial Fund to paint a huge picture to commemorate the Canadian dead. The work failed to capture John’s attention and he was sent home after two months for knocking out a fellow officer.
