Summary
Hearts are Trumps, subtitled ‘An Original Drama of Modern Life’, was a play by Cecil Raleigh (ne Rowlands) first shown at the Theatre Royal in London. Raleigh was known for his melodramas and When Hearts are Trumps does not disappoint. The somewhat convoluted story involved unsuitable marriage, parental estrangement, gambling debts, revenge and humiliation until the four protagonists are reunited in a blinding snow storm proving hearts are indeed trumps. The play was later made into a silent feature film, directed by Rex Ingram, in 1920.
