Summary
In 1924 Wadsworth travelled to the south of France and Italy, but mainly to Marseilles. “Edward made sketches for a series of paintings and drawings of the steep, narrow streets which lead down to the harbour in the Quartier Réservé. These streets, where the washing hung from side to side, are gone now – in the interests of hygiene, we are told: the rue des Gassins, the Hospice de la Charité, rue Fontaine de Caylus, rue de la Reynarde, rue des Quartre Patissiers, lanes of tall, ancient dwellings …”
