Colin Self was born in Norwich and studied at Norwich School of Art and later at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He is considered a member of the British Pop Art movement of the 1960s, and has been included in most of the large survey exhibitions of the decade. Although he applauded the movement as a working class affront to traditional fine art elitism, he had serious reservations about its celebration of wealth and consumerism.
