Summary
Amid the bewildering mass of information we all now live amongst, it seems increasingly difficult for an artist to know in which direction to go. Whether it is because of this bewilderment or because of a belief in a ‘truth to materials’ ethic I don’t know, but I do find many crafts people retreat into the intricacies and intimacies of their crafts; perhaps this is for sustenance, perhaps for shelter.
Whilst I believe that good pieces of work must entail an intimate feel for the craft, I would nonetheless prefer my pottery to relate more to the everyday world we live in. For instance, rather than featuring the mark made by the potters wire in the soft clay, I would prefer to make forms which look outwards to the artifacts we live amongst — the pavements we walk on; the door handles we push open, or the basins we wash our faces in.
