Janice Salmon studied at Bolton College of Art and Manchester Polytechnic. In addition to her work in felt, she also experimented with paper making. Both felt and paper are constructed using similar techniques, which makes fibres mesh together in water. Janice Salmon used this process to form thick heavy felt mats and rugs, randomly patterned with coloured fibres. Some of her work was made up into hats or slippers, and she also developed a three dimensional effect by a kind of quilting applied to the surface of the felt in simple bold patterns.
