Summary
There is a real challenge when using old and unwanted materials to transform and change their identity and character. I first explored the traditional technique of rag rug ‘hooking’ as an art student. Through my research I realised how historically rag rug making has always been linked with ‘thrift’ craft, the ‘make-do-and-mend’ philosophy. I decided to adopt and continue this approach by introducing contemporary scrap materials such as foils, plastics and nylons. I am inspired by traditional rag rug making from Canada and Britain, particularly the use of simple folk designs and commemorative text and I now use logos and words applied to patches within the hooked textiles.
Michael Owen was a striker for Liverpool Football Club, and at the time of writing in November 2004 plays for Newcastle United.
