William Marshall (1923 – 2007)
William Marshall was born in St Ives and was the first of the local apprentices to be employed at the Leach Pottery, when he joined at the age of 14 in 1938. He remained there for almost four decades, becoming a skilled thrower and, eventually, foreman. After Bernard Leach’s death in 1979, Marshall set up a pottery at Lelant only a few miles away. In style Marshall’s work is very close to that of Leach and Hamada.
