John Maltby trained as a sculptor and subsequently taught, before working with David Leach. In 1964 he established his own workshop at Crediton in Devon, where he made a range of domestic and individual pots. Since 1976 he has concentrated on making individual works. The pieces are usually fired three times before the surface is given texture and the work receives a final firing to 850ºC.
