Stephen Cox (1946 – )
Stephen Cox was born in Bristol in 1946 and studied at both Loughborough and Central School of Art.
His early sculptural works, experimenting with relief work and materials such as plasterboard, were exhibited at the Whitechapel and Lisson Galleries before a tour of Italy in 1979 lead to the development of his characteristic style.
Cox works mainly in stone, but has also experimented with sand and wood. Italian and Mediterranean styles were a great influence on his work as were experiences in India, where he still has a studio.
In 1985 the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol reviewed his career and in 1995 he presented an exhibition at the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds, entitled Surfaces and Stones of Egypt.
The Arts Council England Collection and British Council Collection hold examples of his work.
