Emma Bridgewater (1960 – )
Emma Bridgewater was born in Cambridge and studied English Literature at London University. In 1984 she established Bridgewater to produce a range of earthenware that relied on traditional techniques of manufacture and decoration. The patterning is applied by hand using sponges and brushes.

Earthenware
One of the three major types of pottery, the others being stoneware and porcelain. It is opaque, soft and porous unless covered completely with glaze. The firing temperatures can be low - 800ºC or high - 1200ºC, when it starts to vitrify, becoming stoneware.
