Jackie Karuti is a Kenyan artist, based at Kuona Trust, Nairobi. For six weeks, Karuti was in residence at 32° East (Kampala, Uganda) to develop her performative and mixed media practice, as part of an East African Mobility Project which creates opportunities for artists in the region to move across borders.
Jackie Karuti talks about the experience of taking her work to Kampala in this film commissioned by 32° East.
East African Exchange: Jackie Karuti from 32º East | Ugandan Arts Trust on Vimeo.
The project is a joint initiative by the British Council and a number of arts organisations in East Africa - 32° East (Uganda), Ale School of Fine Arts (Ethiopia) Kuona Trust (Kenya). Knowledge sharing is key to this project. The movement of artists will lead to new ideas, concepts and artworks being produced and exhibited across the described regions. The project will also generate new understanding between Ugandan, East African and British cultural producers by inviting a UK cultural producer to enter into peer-to-peer dialogue with East African art managers in Kampala.
