On 22 September 2017, two solo exhibitions by Scottish artists Bruce McLean and Ross Sinclair open at the Shanghai Himalayas Museum in China.
These exhibitions are the third part of CURRENT |不合时宜: Contemporary Art from Scotland, a collaborative project between Scotland and China. Curated by Cooper Gallery, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee in the UK in collaboration with Shanghai Himalayas Museum and organised in partnership with the British Council, this four-phase contemporary art exhibition programme showcases the distinctiveness of contemporary art made in Scotland, its grass-roots spirit and its keen debates with the social dimensions of art and culture for the first time in China.
This will be the first major exhibition in China of the preeminent British artist Bruce McLean, whose career spans 48 years. His work takes an ironic take on sculpture and is infused with subversive wit.
Whilst Ross Sinclair presents Real Life Is Dead/Long Live Real Life, a new phase of an ongoing series of exhibitions, performances and installations that critiques the experience of the ‘real’, exhibition. Ahead of the exhibition, Sinclair undertakes a two-week British Council-supported residency at the Shanghai Himalayas Museum, from 4-20 September. The artist will work with local musicians, artists, singers and publics to create The Chinese-Scottish Real Life Orchestra, a musical dialogue between Chinese audiences and his Real Life project.
Both McLean and Sinclair also have works in the British Council Collection.
