Summary
A work of absurd ambition, The Wall was Pink Floyd’s fully-fledged rock opera. They were already one of the biggest bands in the world, but playing in such huge venues to hoards of anonymous fans was becoming hard to handle. Bassist and songwriter Roger Waters imagined building a wall between band and audience. Not only did this become a semi-autobiographical concept album, it became a reality during live shows. Physical theatre, surreal animation and the gradual formation of a giant white wall (which was pulled down at the show’s climax), ‘The Wall’ took the concept album and the rock show into new territories.
