Summary
In the autumn of 1962 Boshier visited India on a one-year scholarship and on his return abandoned his previous figuration and adopted a hard-edged often geometric style, using shaped canvases. The screenprint in this exhibition falls into this period of his career. In an interview with Tessa Sidey, Boshier commented ‘The prints I produced nearly always related to something I was doing at the time. Output was based around the shaped canvases … (and) explored the idea of illusion.’ ¹ Printed on two sheets of paper collaged together, an optical illusion is created by the bright discs of colour printed on the under sheet seen through the cut out holes of the top sheet.
