Self had made etchings whilst at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, and Out of Focus Objects and Flowerswas his first major group. It harked back to a time, he said, ‘before the bomb on Hiroshima. And before one was ever confronted or assaulted by those arrogant, prattish ‘isms’ of Art and behaviour’.¹
