Summary
Founded in 1982, the Hacienda took its name from a Situationist term, loosely translating to “utopia”. The Manchester nightclub and gig venue had a significant influence on British pop culture, popularising and guiding the direction of acid house, rave music and the Madchester scene. Legendary record label Factory Records funded the project. Factory famously assigned catalogue numbers to every product they were associated with, the Hacienda being “FAC 51”. For a variety of reasons, and despite its popularity, the club became unprofitable and closed its doors in 1997. Peter Hook of New Order published a book in 2009 about his time as the Hacienda's co-owner, entitled “How Not To Run a Club”.
