Louise Slater (1956 – 1999)
Louise Slater studied silversmithing and jewellery at Sheffield City Polytechnic. Despite her training she worked in plastics at the beginning of her career. Early on she experimented with laminates, using laser cutting techniques. She has also used vinyl and Formica Colocore, materials more usually associated with kitchen worktops. The works in the collection combine the high pressure laminate Diafos with tiny beach pebbles collected in Devon, tied in place with wire. This combination of natural and manmade materials reflected her need to experiment and to try out new juxtapositions.
