Summary

This work is taken from As is When, a suite of 12 screenprints based on the life and work of the Austrian born philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. First published in 1965, it is now regarded as a landmark in the history of modern British printmaking, and in particular in the acceptance of screenprinting as a fine art medium. Fragments of Wittgenstein’s texts were brought together and all but three handled as abstractions; this work is biographical and refers to Wittgenstein’s time in the army. Images within the portfolio were literally recycled: prints were cut up on the studio guillotine and elements collaged to create subsequent works in the series.
