Thomas Sturge Moore (1870 – 1944)
Thomas Sturge Moore was born in Hastings, Sussex. He studied wood engraving under Charles Roberts at Lambeth School of Art, London. He was the brother of the philosopher G E Moore, and in the whole course of his life, he was more an author than an artist. He had strong ties with the private press movement, in particular the Essex House Press and Vale Press. He edited texts, engraved books and illustrated de Guerin’s The Centaur and Bacchante. His works were criticised for their introversion and backward looking aesthetic.

Engraving
An intaglio process whereby lines are cut into a metal or wood plate using an engraving tool (a burin), which is pushed in front of the hand to achieve a sharp controlled incision capable of great delicacy. This technique requires a great deal of control and is not suited to spontaneous mark-making.
