Lucy McKenzie (1977 – )
A prodigious talent since graduating in 1999, following her attendance Tromp l’oeil painting course at the prestigious École Van Der Kelen in Brussels McKenzie’s paintings have largely taken the form of Quodlibet’s - a fanciful form of Tromp l’oeil which aims to please it’s viewers through optical illusion. McKenzie uses this form of painting to bring together a huge range of artefacts which reflect her highly sophisticated and wide reaching cultural interests.
The artist’s practice often extends out of the gallery into activities such as record producing, writing and publishing of novels and most prolifically her fashion label Atelier EB produced in collaboration with designer Beca Lipscombe. McKenzie shifts easily between these forms of working and views painting as just another tool available to her as an artist.
