Summary

Marriott describes his approach variously as ‘resourceful design’ or ad-hocism but much of his output also pays homage to modernist and post-modernist design. ‘The use of recycled components in my work is guided by a philosophy which calls for the appropriate, sensible and cunning use of all available resources – in terms of processes and technologies as well as materials. The fact that there are recycled materials in my work is really quite incidental. My work is ultimately about resourcefulness, combined with a desire to create ‘warm’ pieces of modern design and I find there is a quiet wit in objects taken out of context to fuel another function. There is an underlying ecological concern in everything I do in that I always consider the full environmental impact of any decision might have. This is also to do with challenging accepted perceptions of material value and questioning the nature of consumption.’
