Ansel Krut draws on literary sources for ideas and energy but does not make paintings that refer to specific narratives. He is concerned to create a sense of dramatic reality rather than making any direct comment on the perceivable world. He is not concerned with the joyful experience of physical being but with the complex psychological uncertainties, not untinged by a nervous pleasure, of undressed vulnerability, of a mortal nakedness. Unafraid of dreadful imaginings and bad dreams, his art momentarily lifts the curtain on things we may wish had been left in the dark.
