This is a portrait of Dom Wilfred Upson, Benedictine Prior of Caldey. Gill first met him in January 1924 when he visited the monastery on Caldey Island to talk about his proposed residence at Capel-y-ffin in South Wales. The Gill family subsequently moved there, from Ditchling in Sussex, in 1924.
