Summary

The Primrose League was founded in 1883 by admirers of the Tory Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, who had died two years earlier, and by 1890 the League had over a million supporters. Since the League’s aims were to promote and further Tory principles Disraeli’s favourite flower, the primrose, was adopted as an emblem. Membership declined steadily from the late 1980s and the league was finally wound up in 2004.
