Summary
In a series of theatre performances during 1969-70 I had used conventional theatre’s basis of words ironically: I used words visually, building the ‘scenery’ for my performances out of huge walls of words which dwarfed the performers, so that the words has as physical a presence as a grove of trees, or a wall of advertising hoardings: a forest of words. I developed this theme during 1970 in a series of room installations which I then photographed, utilising perspective to produce landscapes of words, resulting in the WORDSCAPE series of pictures.
