Ian Breakwell was born in Derby in 1943. He studied at the local College of Art and at the West of England College of Art in Bristol.

Breakwell was prolific, practicing art in a variety of media and focusing on the relationship between words and images. He exhibited extensively from the 1960’s until his death in 2005 with shows at the ICA, The Arnolfini Gallery and the Scottish Arts Council gallery in Edinburgh.

Anthony Reynolds became his dealer and Breakwell was the first artist to be dedicated a solo show at Reynolds’s gallery in 1985. He was also an artist in residence at the School of Anatomy in Cardiff University, produced films such as Repertory (1973) and The Journey (1975) and published over 15 works including Diary Extracts (1977), ,i>Continuous Diary (1978) and Fiction Texts (1978).

During his career he also taught at Somerset College of Art and was Director of the Bristol Arts Centre.
