Keith Baynes (1887 – 1977)
Keith Baynes was born in 1887 near Reigate, Surrey. He attended Cambridge University but did not complete his degree because of health problems. He left the UK in 1907 and spent two years in Jamaica to recover from his illness.
In 1912 he entered the Slade School of Fine Art in London and, during World War I, began to exhibit at New English Art Club and with the London Group from 1919.
He started travelling extensively in the 1920s and exhibiting regularly in London. He was close to the Bloomsbury Group and held a major retrospective of his work in 1969 at the Minories, Colchester.
