Summary

Of the series Steelworks, Germain wrote in 1994 that it ‘is about the social, physical and emotional impact exerted by major industry upon Consett, County Durham, a small Northern English town, and the effect of that industry’s closure in 1980. It is also about photographs, who took them and why. Alongside my own work I have included snapshots and Tommy Harris’s pictures taken for local newspapers. Shown in this new ‘context’, they can be appreciated for their social and documentary value and also as photographs in their own right’.
