Summary

The starting point for Paolozzi’s screenprints has always been a collage. In the 1960s these were coloured collages which could be seen as finished works in themselves, and Paolozzi returned to this working method for the prints of 1990s. But in the 1980s he began making black and white collages from sections of sheets of photographically enlarged linear compositions – in the same way he had used sections of large screenprinted sheets for the collages some 20 years earlier. Black and white collages were made this way for the Calcium Night Lightseries of screenprints for Charles Ives. The collages were continually reworked and reinterpreted in different media.
