Summary

One of the leading figures of the British Pop Art Movement, Blake began using images of contemporary musicians as subject matter for his paintings in the late 1950s. Drawn from printed material such as publicity stills, record covers and music magazines, the finished paintings usually incorporated collage and lettering. In 1963 Blake was invited to contribute to the ICA portfolio and his subject The Beachboyscontinued the pop musician theme of his paintings and collages, and recalled the trip he made to California the previous year. This was Blake’s first published screenprint and the apparent unfinished areas and obvious imperfections became a feature of his work, as if to draw attention to the process and the illusory nature of art. The work was printed at the Kelpra Studio in London.
