Moving Pictures in Estonia

At the end September 2016, artist Laura Buckley was invited to Talinn, Estonia to be the main guest of the KuFF - Kumu Art Film Festival at Kumu Art Musuem. KuFF was the first and only cultural event in Estonia to focus on the relationship between film and the visual arts. Buckley spoke at the opening alongside the screening of her work, which is part of Moving Pictures, and she gave a lecture to students at the EKA Faculty of Fine Arts in Talinn.

Born in Ireland, Buckley lives and works in London. She works expansively with moving image, sound, light, sculpture and digital print. We asked Laura about her trip to Estonia: “It was a pleasure to be invited to be a part of the KuFF festival at the impressive KUMU in Tallinn this year. It was my first time visiting this beautiful city and I was met by many warm and welcoming people there. It was a privilege to give a short talk to introduce ;Moving Pictures on behalf of the British Council.”

Moving Pictures in Uzbekistan

On 15 and 16 December, Moving Pictures is screened at The Gallery of Art of Uzbekistan in Tashkent and the Bonum Factum Gallery of Uzbekistan. Brad Butler, one of the artist filmmakers whose work features in Moving Pictures, is travelling to Uzbekistan to introduce each screening as well as give a lecture at the Institute of Design and Arts. The screening accompanies the British Council Collection exhibition, New Past, currently on view at The Gallery of Art in Tashkent.

Brad Butler works with Karen Mirza and their multilayered practice encompasses filmmaking, drawing, installation, photography, performance, publishing and curating. Mirza and Butler are the founders of the artist film and video space called no.w.here, which is now in its 10th year.

Since 2014 Moving Pictures has been screened at 23 venues in eight countries having been seen by 22,000 people. Artist filmmakers Benedict Drew and Elizabeth Price (Turner Prize winner in 2014) have travelled to Azerbaijan and China to give talks alongside the screenings.
