John Strevens was born in London. He was mostly self taught but did attend classes at the Regent Street Polytechnic and Heatherley’s School of Art. To support his painting Strevens worked in an illustration studio near Fleet Street. In 1943 he had his first one-man show, after which he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. the Paris Salon and with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.. He is best known for his portraiture – sitters included Winston Churchill and Princess Elizabeth.
