Hilary Roberts was born in London. She originally studied law and worked for a time for a legal publisher before enrolling at Harrow School of Art in 1991. She was awarded a setting up grant by the Crafts Council in 1995 which enabled her to establish a studio in Yorkshire. Her works owe much to her understanding and knowledge of 18th century pottery and early industrial ceramic processes. Roberts’ uses porcelain which she considers contemporary, practical and elegant. Her pieces are mostly thrown and decorated with different white glazes or plaster stamps of architectural detail or texture. The white on white glazes have a translucency through which the occasional sparkle of a crystalline patch catches the light and twinkles.
