p>Jock Kinneir was born in Hampshire and studied at Chelsea School of Art, where he later taught. Whilst still a student he was commissioned by Shell, after the war Kinneir worked for the Central Office of Information and later the Design research Unit. He set up a design practice in 1956, taught part time and later became Head of Graphic Design at the Royal College of Art (1964-69). His major contribution to British design was the development of a clear signage and pictograms for roads and motorways in the UK.
