Francis Haden was a qualified doctor and practised medicine with some success: Queen Victoria was a patient. Haden married James McNeill Whistler’s sister in 1847 and for a time there was a similarity between the two artists’ work. Haden’s first etchings date from a visit to Italy in 1843, and in all he produced over 250 etchings, the vast majority of which were landscapes. He was a tireless champion of the medium, founding the Royal Society of Etchers and Engravers in 1880.
