Willie Doherty was born in Derry in Northern Ireland and studied at Ulster Polytechnic in Belfast. He was short listed for the Turner Prize in 1994 and again in 2002. His work was shown at the São Paulo Bienal in 2002. Willie Doherty has consistently taken as his subject the political conflict in Northern Ireland. The means by which he has explored this have evolved subtly over the years but have essentially remained a balance between image and language, from his early photographs of landscapes and faces juxtaposed with text to more recent photographs and videos.
