Summary

(This drawing) is based on a woman I encountered whilst photographing Glasgow. She lived on a bleak post-war housing estate on the city’s outskirts. What struck me about this woman was the fact the whilst burdened by immense personal problems – an epileptic daughter, bereaved of her husband, poverty stricken and living in a house riddled with damp – she still found the energy to fight for her community. She was a true working-class fighter, a hard and determined woman gifted with an amazing inner strength … I hope the drawing will make people aware of the spirit of resistance that flourishes in seemingly depressed and decaying communities throughout our country (in the 1980s).
